I say Communications is the most useful degree with a smidgen of bias. But that is just because I love my major so much I can’t see how anyone else’s could be better or even as good. This past week I feel in love all over again. I was a career fair that was meant for business students only. But, being the rebel I am, I decided they can’t tell me I can’t go. I went.

While browsing through the crowded rows of booths I stumbled upon one company that looked interesting to me. I got to talking to the representative and found it so easy to build a relationship with him because of all I have learned in my Communication classes. He wasn’t surprised to learn that I was a Communication major because I was an excellent communicator. Even though they were strictly looking for Marketing majors, he asked for an interview with me because he thought my communication skills were a force to be reckoned with.

So, again I say, Communications is the best major. I say this because no matter how many internships, co-ops, shadows, or A’s you have on your resume, people want to hire a person. A person that they can relate to and form a relationship with. A person that they know can then form a relationship with their clients.

Public Relations for Dummies http://fall15blogs.tracigardner.com/2015/09/24/public-relations-for-dummies/ Fri, 25 Sep 2015 02:55:05 +0000 http://blogs.lt.vt.edu/morgantoelle/?p=4354 Read more →

So it has crossed my mind lately that some people have absolutely no idea what public relations is or how important it is to each and every business, brand, or organization of any kind. I am going to make it easy. Here is your publicity crash course in 3 simple steps.

1. Research your market. The better you know your publics, the easier it is to effectively communicate with them.research gif

2. Make a Twitter account. Technology is your friend, not your foe. Learn to love it, and USE it! It is 2015. If you are not on Twitter, you are completely irrelevant.comp gif

3. Fine tune your elevator pitch, not your press release. These days, journalists are too busy to sit down and read every press release that slides across their desk. If you can get their attention in a quick one-minute-long pitch, you make their life that much easier and they will thank you for it.thank you gif

Now go forth, my PR pros, and do good!your welcome
