I think this would be a great opportunity for me in the future. This convention will help me in my future publishing career by giving me access to some of the world’s greatest publishing individuals and corporations. The world’s greatest publishing minds will be at this conference, and I feel that it will be beneficial for me to hear their advice It is on October the 13th. I was surprised to find that the convention was only one day long; however, it seems like an excellent opportunity to learn more about the publishing world.

The airfare expense is one of the biggest restrictions of attending. However, this month, round-trip flights to Berlin are less than $500. This is through STA (Student Travel Agency) and I just recently seen this online. I am very tempted to simply to buy a plane ticket and go and train to Frankfurt for the weekend.

Give Life Attention http://fall15blogs.tracigardner.com/2015/10/02/give-life-attention/ Fri, 02 Oct 2015 18:48:40 +0000 http://blogs.lt.vt.edu/jessicaharless/?p=4386 Continue reading ]]> We all use it. We all check it. But is social media really that social?

Our generation is known as the sharing generation and this is an undeniable fact. We spend countless hours hiding behind a screen creeping on our friends. If it’s not on Instagram, did it really happen? First it was Myspace, then Facebook, and now Twitter and Instagram. Social media has taken over most of our lives and we cannot stop it. We spare a little extra time in our morning routine so we can check all of these sites. It is a nasty habit that is hard to break. This part of our daily routine takes away a lot of time we could be spending on something that really mattered.

Social media distracts you from your surroundings, so it is hard to have meaningful conversations with friends without the anxiety of wanting to check your phone. Most of us are probably guilty of absentmindedly responding to the people around us when there are more pressing matters in our hands. There is so much you can miss by always looking at your phone.

Most of us check social media so often because we are bored. Or, in an awkward situation we look down at our phones because we lack the proper social skills to interact with people. There are countless moments we have all missed out on something amazing due to constantly looking at our phones.

Can you go one day without your phone? It’s weird to imagine what it was like without cell phones. It would be difficult to make plans with our friends without the use of our phones. Our generation has become so dependent on technology, it seems impossible to go without it due to our need for constant communication.

The point is, there is so much more to life than what is on social media. You could be out making those memories rather than sitting back and watching everyone else have a good time through your phone screen. Try something new and introduce yourself to the person sitting beside you on the bus rather than aimlessly scrolling through your phone.

Give life attention. There is so much to experience and so many people you could meet just by putting your phone down..

So what’s next? http://fall15blogs.tracigardner.com/2015/10/02/so-whats-next/ Fri, 02 Oct 2015 18:48:15 +0000 http://blogs.lt.vt.edu/jessicaharless/?p=4382 Continue reading ]]> As an English major Pre-law and Professional writing focus, I aspire to either go to have a career where I can use the skills I have obtained in school on a regular basis. I also have a minor in German in which I am very passionate about. I plan to find an internship or a short-term job in Germany after graduation then continue to grad school.  I desire greatly to ultimately settle down with a job with a well-known publishing house. Because of this, I am very passionate about learning the tricks and hacks of editing all types of documents. However, I desire greatly to do this abroad. I would love to help authors in Germany publish English novels. I plan to find an internship after college that will allow me to do this. I think it is important for everyone to travel at some point in his or her lives. It is an eye-opening experience and is very beneficial to understand more about yourself and the world.
