Paper Free Is the Way to Be

Let me set the record straight, I love Virginia Tech. I think it is a wonderful college full of interesting and intelligent people who truly will “invent the future.” However, just as our famous tagline suggests, let us start thinking about the future.

I still can not wrap my head around the idea that such an advanced college would still allow many professors to require paper submission of essays and homework.

Yes, I understand some things are best submitted in hard copy. That is fine. However, as an English major I use a lot of paper.

I mean a lot of paper. In fact, I did the math. I used almost two full packs of computer paper (I was 315 pages short) last year alone. Each pack contains 500 sheets of paper. That means I printed 685 sheets of paper.

In addition, I used 5 ink cartridges. To me, that is appalling.

To play devils advocate, I will address opposing viewpoints and admit that I realize some professors do not know how to properly operate a computer. However, I think it is worth the time spent learning than the amount of trees 31,000 students may be using to print required documents and homework.

Connections

We all connect. We find something we are passionate about and we connect to it. It could be fashion, sports, drama, art, writing, etc. These connections draw you closer to the object of your interest.

For me, this connection is the world. I wake up, step out of bed, and look outside. The apartment I live in is is built on the very ground we all call “home.”

To me, the environment, including: the trees, lakes, rivers, animals, mountains, and valleys, are interconnected with my life and who I am.

I want to protect them. I want to help them maintain as much of their natural shape, form, and movement, despite living in a world of production, destruction, and depletion.

I am passionate about the environment because it has given me ground to stand on, water to drink, warmth, energy, nutrients, oxygen, animals to enjoy, and so much more.

For something that has given me so much, I ask myself, what can I do in return?

Have You Ever?

Have you ever wished you could make a difference? Have you ever looked at something and wanted to make a positive change? Have you ever heard of a tragic event that happened and said “I wish I could have done something to prevent it”?

That is what law can offer me. Law can give me a chance to make a change. Law can give me a chance to make a difference.

When I die, I want to be remembered for the good I have done. For having a dream, working for it, and making it come true. As a child, I looked at the castle at Disney World and thought “this is where dreams are made.” Now I realize, you are responsible for your own dreams.

If you have a dream- go after it.

It won’t go after you.

Audience Is The Key While Clarity Is The Door

When it comes to professional writing, one must think about their audience when drafting a document. The audience has much to do with what style to choose, word usage and vocabulary, and overall tone. If a writer is speaking to the CEO of a company, he or she may be more formal than replying to a co-worker over email.

Just as audience is important, clarity is an even larger aspect to professional writing. Professional writing should be clean, easy to navigate, easy to read, and easy to understand.
