  • My main goal is to build this portfolio website into something that I can show potential employers. Also, because of the importance of networking, I’d like to be able to show my portfolio to other students. The revised portfolio will highlight my abilities in design, writing, and video editing. In the following modules, I’ll explain how (and in what time frame) I plan to make that happen.

  • First, there are a few current issues with the site that need to be fixed as soon as possible. For example, the main navigation’s drop down menus don’t always show up, which makes it hard to find some of my work. I’ve also been told that my site takes a while to load, so I intend to do some research and find out why that might be. Another thing I’ve noticed is a random black bar that appears when my page is loading — I’d really like to get rid of that.

  • By February (but preferably sooner) I intend to to upload all of the work I’ve completed during the fall semester, as well as my resume. The samples will include two commercials I edited, seven design projects (brochures, posters, etc), and possibly one or two essays. I also hope to revise my Alice in Wonderland story source interrogation by February. I want to keep it online, but I think it could use more detail and better word choices.

  • Once my first round of uploads is done, the site will have several examples of design work, but it may need more writing samples. I plan to upload anything usable that I create during the spring semester. In addition, I will start and maintain a blog to showcase my writing abilities as well as the knowledge I’ve gained as a Comm major.

I think the site’s design itself should be an example of my abilities. However, I don’t plan to change the design much unless I can access the code. Therefore, the most ambitious thing I would like to do in the long term is download WordPress, create the site from scratch and figure out how to get it hosted. I know how to install WordPress locally using MAMP and I prefer doing that because the downloaded version of WordPress allows me more control over the code, but I’m not sure how to get it hosted publicly and I don’t know how feasible that is. Hopefully I can make it happen before I graduate in the spring.

  • So basically, by the time I graduate (this spring), I plan to create a portfolio site filled with samples that display a variety of communication-related skills. These will include essays, blog posts, design projects, videos, and my resume. Hopefully my design skills will also be showcased by the structure and design choices of the site itself, once I can work with the code. The end result should be professional and formal enough to show to potential employers, but also interesting enough to share with other students.

Here’s my draft. I’m basically making a sped-up, animated version of the first part of the movie Alice in Wonderland. Since I’ve never used Flash before, I only have a couple animations so far (carriage arrives, duke’s mother pulls Alice out of carriage… and Alice is going to end up dancing with the duke).

I gave up on drawing heads and hands for now. I’ll add them in later. ? I also plan to add backgrounds soon.

Creating an Interesting Character: Part Two http://fall15blogs.tracigardner.com/2015/09/27/creating-an-interesting-character-part-two/ Mon, 28 Sep 2015 00:41:34 +0000 http://blogs.lt.vt.edu/jessverba/?p=4394 Read more →

I’m back! In this post, I’ll give two more tips on how to create an engaging and relatable character for your short story.

The second step to creating an interesting character is to introduce conflict that the character has to overcome.

Creating conflict is kind of an obvious plot technique because it adds tension and drama to the story. However, it’s not just a vital part of building a plot. It has the added effect part of making your reader begin to sympathize with the character. Describing the character in vivid detail can make the reader feel that he/she knows the character, but creating conflict is what will (hopefully, if done right) make the reader begin to actually care about the character’s life.

The third step to creating an interesting character is to use character development.

Once the reader is fully engaged in the character’s story, the final step in creating an interesting character is to guide her personal development over the course of the story. By this I mean that by the end of the story, the character should have learned something or grown in some way. By doing this, you use the character to say something about humanity itself, and the reader recognizes himself in the character. He or she becomes the character.

Thus ends this fancy two-part series on creating an interesting character.

Last spring I took a creative writing class which, despite occurring at 8am, ended up being my favorite course of the semester.

For our first creative writing workshop, each student had to choose to either write three poems or one short story. Two days before the assignment was due, I realized that none of the poems I was writing were coming together, so I panicked, downed a few cups of coffee, and stayed up all night writing my first complete short story (which you can find in the creative writing section of this website, if you’re curious).

My story is no masterpiece, but it did have the benefit of introducing me to the intriguing puzzle of creating an interesting character. So here are a couple of guidelines I learned from that class about how to create a character your reader can care about.

The first tip is to flesh out the character.

One thing that goes a long way towards creating an interesting character to use concrete, specific details. Talk about your character’s history, her likes and dislikes, her daily routine, etc. What grocery store does she go to? What’s on her grocery list? Even a character’s quick decision to choose provolone cheese over cheddar at Safeway could be the thing that turns her, in the reader’s imagination, from an indistinct form to a vivid and relatable character.

This post is the first half of a two-part series on creating an interesting character. I could fit everything into one post, but a “two-part series” just seems much snazzier. Stay tuned for the second half!
