Blacksburg, Virginia is a small town defined by the university that sits in the center of it — Virginia Tech. Blacksburg is a quiet place. It is your standard college town that fosters over 20,000 students each year. Ranked the seventh safest city in Virginia, Blacksburg is a place of serenity and peace. However, on fall Saturdays a beast awakens. You can hear it’s roar from miles away. The earth beneath it shakes and all opposition tremble in fear. This beast is known as Lane Stadium — the home of the Hokies.

Any individual who hasn’t been to a game in Lane Stadium should add it to their bucket list. Moments before the start of the game, 66,233 fans rush to their seats in order to experience the spectacle that is the entrance of the Hokies. Half of the stadium lets out a deafening chant of “LETS GO”, while the other half answers back with an ear-drum shattering response of “HOKIES!” These chants continue for nearly 30 seconds until one of the greatest entrances of all of sports ensues. Metallica’s “Enter Sandman” is the trigger. Once the first guitar strings are heard through the loud speakers, the Hokie fans turn into maniacs. 66,000+ unite together to form one giant bouncing mass of maroon and orange. Screams and excitement fill the air as every person in the stadium hops up and down, setting the stage for the entrance of the Hokies. When the team enters the stadium the insanity continues.

Games in Lane Stadium are defined by tradition. Recognized nationally as one of the hardest places to play for opponents, the loud fans remain rowdy for the entire competition. On every third down play, the fans whip out their keys and rattle them as loud as they can to add even more volume on “key plays”. With each offensive first down, the band cues fans to chant “H-O-K-I-E-S HOKIES!” If the team wins, forget about the peace and serenity of Blacksburg. Fans crowd downtown in celebration of the victory. It’s a town-wide party.

When the game ends, the beast of Lane Stadium goes back to sleep; silently watching over Blacksburg awaiting the next competition.

Lane Stadium is made up of more than concrete, steel, and Hokie Stone. It is defined by it’s fans and tradition. Every time that somebody attends a game in Lane Stadium, a piece of them stays there, just as a piece of the stadium will forever live within the fan. Lane Stadium is a beast — the eighth wonder of the world. It is a must-have experience for all sports fans. The beast will never be tamed, not even in defeat. The beast will rise again each week and boast it’s intimidating nature. Lane Stadium is, without a doubt, the best college football stadium in the nation.
