The Importance of Audience

Audience is one of the most important aspects of writing, technical or otherwise. However, as an aspiring medical and technical writer, audience becomes a top priority. Before beginning any writing, it is important to think about who you are writing to. For example, you wouldn’t use the same language and sentence structure if you were writing to fifth graders as opposed to older adult professionals. Similarly, you wouldn’t use the same language when writing a novel aimed towards teenage girls as opposed to a manual on how to construct a bike. As a future medical writer, there are two main audiences I will be writing to. I will be writing to the general public in some cases. For this, I would use language that the average person can understand, and take extra care to explain concepts and technical words the average person wouldn’t understand. I might also be writing to professionals in the fields, in which case I will have to use the proper technical terms and will not have to give as much basic explanation, such as in a medical journal for medical professionals.
